Welcome to the Greeters Outreach guide. Before you begin reading about this outreach, we’d like to make sure you know what you need to about San Francisco’s Inner-City by visiting the Backstory Page.
What is it?
The Greeting team is a vital part of our Block Party as these team members are the first people that our guests from the community will interact with. This group will greet our guests, register and converse with them while they are in line, and guide people through our block party.
We’re looking for extroverted and warm people who can make our guests feel welcome. We want to do our best to make sure that our guests have a great experience with us. Many people in the community have built emotional walls to keep others out, many may just need a gentle conversation to win their trust. Whatever it may be, we want to be sensitive and help people to know that they are loved. We believe that this team can open hearts to receive the Gospel as their needs are met by the different stations in the Block Party.
If you become a part of the Greeting team, you will report to the 200 block of jones where one of our City Impact leaders will brief you on all that you will need to know for the day. You will then register and greet the guests who will most likely already be in line. As you greet them and register them, you will then give them a wristband which grants them entry and roaming privileges in the block party. Once the appropriate time comes, the Block Party will open and the Greeting team will be in charge of ensuring that people are let in in a peaceful and orderly fashion. As people come in, a section of the greeting team will guide those who would like assistance through the Block Party as many who come in may not be able to navigate it on their own (we have a lot of resources and services, so it’s a great problem to have!).
A good interaction goes a long way and as Scripture says “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Prov. 15:1). We believe that this team will change the atmosphere. It says in Matthew 9:26 “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” and many come to the Block Party in this condition. We believe that this team can change it all for those who come burdened and weary. We hope to instill order, but not with intimidation or fear but with love and compassion!
